Laser / Optical Communications

Warning… Lasers are potentially dangerous.

Eye damage can be permanent and irreversible.

Take care when experimenting with these devices.

Below are some pictures of my Laser Transceiver,

12mW 670nm, 5" Rx lens with PIN diode RX (K3PGP)

Visit K3PGP's web page for lots of info on Lasers

My first and best QSO to date took place on 09.05.98 with GM4RJX/P. I was located near the Blackhill TV Transmitter, whilst Jim was the other side of Glasgow near Greenock. The distance was 46Km, which we believe was the UK record for 2 way laser communications at the time. Signals were many dB above noise, even with all the city lights. Once we had the lasers aligned , both were clearly visible to the naked eye, and the PIN diode receivers had no problem resolving the 800Hz tone. Jim took a photo of the QSO! My laser is clearly visible on the skyline.

I now have a35mW Infra red laser diodes, and hope to be able to make non line of sight QSOs, perhaps using BPSK digital signal processing to improve detection to below the 'noise floor'
